The Royal Forest Route is a route for walking, cycling or driving through the heart of the Royal Forest of Dean. It leads past wonderful attractions that sound like something from a Famous Five story…Clearwell Caves…Puzzle Wood… Mallards Pike.

The Forest itself is the backdrop to your visit. With spring flowers, summer shade and spectacular ferns it really is a magical place. And, of course, the English autumn colours are sensational - so much so that we've included the 'Golden Mile' in this itinerary. This is, we think, the 'must see' area of the Forest in the Autumn months.

This guide (especially our downloadable route guide) aims to inspire you, whether you are here for activities such as cycling, picnicking or bird-watching. We have sculpture trails, picnic sites, quiet paths, streams, pubs and attractions. If you've forgotten what it's like to just stop at the side of the road and walk straight into nature, this is the place to do it!
